Bhumi Pednekar is an Indian actor. She worked as an assistant casting director for Yash Raj Films before becoming an actress. 'Dum Laga Ke Haisha' was her first for which she gained popularity. Bhumi received several awards for her debut performance.

Bhumi Pednekar is an Indian actor and an assistant casting director. She was born on 18 July 1989 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Her zodiac sign is Cancer. She completed her schooling from Arya Vidya Mandir School, Juhu. She holds a degree in Communication and Media Arts from Whistling Woods International Institute of Film, Mumbai. She also has a B. Comm degree.

Her father, Satish Pednekar was a politician and died on 24 March 2011. Her mother, Sumitra Hudda Pednekar is an actress. She has a younger sister, Sameeksha Pednekar.

Bhumi's father was a Maharashtrian, and her mother is a Haryanvi.

Bhumi Pednekar did her early studies from Arya Vidya Mandir, Juhu, Mumbai. She then joined Subhash Ghai's Whistling Woods International to study acting but was suspended due to poor attendance. A year later, she started working as an assistant in the casting division of Yash Raj Films. Bhumi worked there for 6 years.

When her father Satish Pednekar died of cancer on 24 March 2011, Bhumi was 18 and her younger sister Samiksha was 15.

Bhumi Pednekar's mother Sumitra Hooda was seen in the 1982 Haryanvi film 'Bahurani'. After this she produced the 1985 Haryanvi film ‘Saanjhi’.

A few months before she turned 18, Bhumi learned about a vacancy at Yash Raj Films. Excited by the idea of being around films and cinema, she applied for the position of 'Assistant Casting Director' without a second thought. 

Bhumi's debut film ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’

When she was asked by Yash Raj Films to give an audition for ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’, she impressed the casting team with her performance. She subsequently went through about 100 auditions for the role. This was her debut film.

Bhumi had to gain around 25 kilograms for her role in ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’. After the release of the film, she worked out and lost 27 kg.

Bhumi has watched Kamal Rashid Khan’s film ‘Deshdrohi’ almost 100 times.

Bhumi was then seen in the movies, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017), Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan (2017), Bala (2019) and Pati Patni Aur Woh (2019), Lust Stories (2018), Bhoot (2020), Son Chiriya (2019), Atrangi Re (2021).

Bhumi played the role of septuagenarian sharpshooter Chandro Tomar in the film ‘Saand Ki Aankh’. It came out in 2019. Bhumi won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress for her performance.

In 2019, she was awarded with Star Screen Award. She received Zee Cine’s Best Supporting Actress Award in 2020.

In 2022, she was felicitated with ‘Asia One Award’ for her performance in ‘Badhaai Do’. The same year, she was awarded with the Black Swan’s Pathbreaking Actor of the Year Award.

Bhumi was seen in the film 'Rakshabandhan' opposite Akshay Kumar. The film was released in August 2022. The same year, ‘Govinda Naam Mera’ was released on the OTT platform. 

In 2022, she played the lead role in ‘Badhaai Do’. She was seen with Rajkumar Rao. The film depicted sensitive themes revolving around the LGBTQ+ community. 

Bhumi's latest releases

Bhumi was seen in the film ‘Bheed’ alongside Rajkumar Rao; it came out in early 2023. Her latest release was a drama-thriller ‘Afwaah’.
